CHAPTER 21
In her hotel room, Diane sought her husbandâs comfort. âIâm a mess. How can you be so calm?â
Liam stretched out on the bed while thumbing the televisionâs remote controller. âItâs a guy thing. Iâm probably a bigger mess, but Iâm better at fooling myself.â
She unbuttoned her blouse, folded it on the dresser, and placed it in her dirty laundry drawer. Dry skin compelled her to scratch under the strap of her tank top undershirt. âI have to agree, emphatically, caveman.â
âNo need to be rude.â
âThat wasnât rude. I think Iâm jealous.â
âUnderstandable. Emotions can get messy, especially for women.â
âDonât be sexist.â
âItâs true. Women are better communicators thanks to their sensitivity. Men are better hunters thanks to our insensitivity. Iâm just going with your caveman comment.â
âWhatever.â
âAnd with you being a hypersensitive empath, I can see your emotions affecting you.â
âYeah. I said I was a mess.â
âI mean all the time.â
She faced him. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âYouâre an empath, and youâre a woman. Youâre supposed to be sensitive all the time. You canât turn it off, I guess.â
âKeep labeling me and see how long your marriage lasts.â
âSorry. Iâm trying to be⦠um⦠empathetic?â
âAt least youâre trying, I guess. But youâre right. I am very sensitive. That gives you a great opportunity to comfort your wife and talk about whatâs bothering me.â
âHuh? No, thereâs a basketball game on now.â
âSince when do you like basketball?â
âSince I said Iâd consider moving to the States with you.â
She started pacing in front of the bed. âOkay, letâs talk about that.â
âTalk about what?â
âMoving to the States.â
He grimaced. âNo. We agreed to live in Ireland while we figure things out.â
âIâve got images of a nun being tortured in my head. Iâd like to talk about anything else, like where weâre going to live.â
âNot tonight. Weâve already agreed to being messes. Letâs do something less mentally strenuous.â
Fatigued, she backed off. âOkay. Like what?â
âUm, you could watch the game with me.â
She wondered if all newlywed husbands were so awkward. âSeriously? Come on! Whenâs the last time I did anything to make you think I liked sports?â
âWell, never. But I figured you never played sports because youâve got the dexterity of a pregnant three-legged rhino. I didnât think you really disliked sports.â
âWhat did you just call me? What sort of rhino?â
âI was trying to get your mind off⦠stuff. Get serious. Do you really not like basketball? It should be a good game.â
She stopped walking, faced him, and jabbed her fists into her hips. âI donât like sports, and I donât like TV.â
âTVâs relaxing, and thatâs just what you need.â
Warming up to the idea of vegetating with him, since a soothing conversation seemed beyond his skill, she started pacing again. âIâd be willing to watch a romantic comedy movie.â
âHell, no!â
âYou get a choice. We can keep talking, or we can watch a movie of my choice.â
As sheâd hoped, the decision weighed on his tightening shoulders. âUm, if we talk, can I watch the game afterwards?â
She shrugged. âSure.â
âBut we canât talk all night.â He lowered his voice to a deep tone, a trait she normally found sexy, but not tonight.
